Oshawa Harbour with New Concrete Pier
Source: HOPA Ports, Archival Collection
Date: 1950s
Through the great depression and the Second World War, the harbour was a focal point of shipping for Oshawa, including huge supplies of coal, which was the primary means of heating homes in Oshawa during that time. Storage sheds were added over the years, steel harbour walls were extended and roads were built to serve the area. The new west pier was built by William Bermingham and Sons of Kingston. The 1,082 foot structure was 43 feet to the west of the old structure, widening the entrance to the port.
