Date: September 8, 1841
The first efforts were made to develop the Oshawa Harbour in 1840, when the pier and breakwaters were constructed by the Sydenham Harbour Company. The Act to Incorporate as The Sydenham Harbour Company came into effect on September 18, 1841 through a statute of the Province of Canada. The harbour masters at this time were George A. Mothersill, the first harbour master (1841-1848), Joseph Wood (1849) and Thomas (Elder) Henry (1849-1854). Mr. Henry was also one of the founders and a President of the Harbour Company.
