A. F. Hunter, in a dedication speech at the site, is quoted as saying, “In 1886 (thirty seven years ago) when the present speaker first saw these walls, they were higher in many places, and more complete than they are now. Everyone must regret the devastation, by men hunting for relics in 1902 and 1903. The well near the centre suffered most in this raid for relics.”
