Captain’s hat

This captain’s hat is on display over a barometer. It depicts that some captains reportedly hung their hats over the glass of the barometer so that it was easier to ignore. Even though the barometer was falling sharply on Saturday and Sunday, November 8th and 9th, 1913, the pressure was on to complete the last runs of the shipping season. Many ships continued to sail, ignoring the barometric pressure and the storm signals.
