The James Carruthers was built in 1913 by the Collingwood Shipbuilding Company and owned by St. Lawrence & Chicago Steam Navigation Company of Toronto. She was 529 feet long with a 58-foot beam. At the time of the Great Storm of 1913, the James Carruthers was the newest ship on the lakes. When the Carruthers sank in the storm, she took all 25 crew members with her. In the late 1980s, the wreck of the ship was reported found in Lake Huron near Kincardine, Ontario, but this has yet to be confirmed.
