Flaws raised by the inquest
The Goderich lighthouse was built in 1847 and was the second lighthouse to be built on the Canadian side of Lake Huron. During the Great Storm of 1913, the light would have always been on, but would have done little to help ships out on the lake due to the severe conditions of the storm.
During the inquest, issues with the lighthouse’s height were raised. Some felt that the light was not high enough for ships to see.
After the inquest, the light was raised to its current height. Another important improvement was the addition of an electrical system. Although this eliminated the need for a full-time lighthouse keeper, it ensured the light would be on at all times, day and night.
