Barbara Mary Harvey was born on January 2, 1909 in Plymouth, Devon, England to Harry Anthony Harvey and Mary Florence Harvey, née Turpin. She immigrated with her family to Canada at the age of three. Barbara had three siblings—Harry Norman, Patricia and James Benjamin. James passed away when he was only a year old and Harry died when he was about 20.
