In 1879 Jean-Baptiste Rolland replaced his master Ludger Duvernay, upon the latter’s death, as president of the Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste. He also took over from him as owner of the newspaper La Minerve for some years. Actively involved in civic life, he was elected to Montreal municipal council and in 1887, upon the invitation of Prime Minister Sir John A. MacDonald, he became a Senator, representing the division of Mille-Îles.
