Jean Rolland was company president when workers first went on strike. Following the 1942 conflict, another strike was declared in 1944, prompted by dissatisfaction with wages. Employees picketed on the bridge leading to the mill, preventing everyone from crossing—even senior management including Rolland himself. He appealed to the city for an escort to his office, but the mayor of Saint-Jérôme refused: as the strike as proceeding peacefully and calmly, he saw no reason to intervene. Rolland then turned to the police for help, but even with law enforcement officers at his side, he was refused entry by the strikers. In the end, the conflict was settled quickly, lasting just 10 days.
