This is the opening from a Mother’s day concert a few years ago. Sadie introduces the concert while the rest of the cast stands ready to sing.
Sadie Murphy: This concert is very special to us because we have dedicated it to the memory of our concert friend Albie. [Albert Murphy] Albie participated in many concerts over the years delighting the audience with his talent and his humour. Tonight we want to pay tribute to our friend, to keep his memory alive and commemorate his years of service to our community. With all due respect to Albie, we hope to do justice to his talent and manage to entertain you, in the spirit of laughter and fun. Sit back and enjoy the show.
Opening song: “Only One Mother” by Angus Stewart.
Lyrics:
It seems a few years have gone by, by now,
Since father and I had our talk,
You know the old one from father to son,
He gave me that day while we walked.
He said, son, there is many a treasure to find,
And much in this world to behold;
But remember this well what I have to tell,
And these are the words that he told:
Only one mother, that’s all that we get,
Treat her with kindness, with love and respect;
Only one mother in this world, my son,
There’s only one mother, only one mom.
Who was the one that you ran to,
The first time you fell out a tree?
Who was the one that made it all fun,
And bandaged the bump on your knee?
Who fixes your favorite breakfast each day,
And tucks you in bed every night?
Who is the one that gets it all done,
And seems to make everything right?
Only one mother, that’s all that we get,
Treat her with kindness, with love and respect;
Only one mother in this world, my son.
There’s only one mother, only one mom.
Time passes by all too quickly it seems,
Now I have a son of my own;
I think that it’s time that I dropped him a line,
It’s been a while since he’s called home.
I think that I’ll tell him this story I know,
My father told me on that day
And the words that he said are still in my head,
And to my own son I will say.
