Captain Gray was born in Toronto, ON, 19 May 1887. He moved to London, ON, as a child and attended St. George’s Public School. On 2 November 1914, he left Queens’s University and enlisted as a Private in the 18th Battalion of the CEF. He served with the 4th Battalion Machine Gun Company before accepting a commission in the British Army in January 1917. James Gray was promoted to Captain and served in the 10th Battalion Tank Corps. Awarded the Military Cross in 1918, Capt. Gray died in Great Britain on 18 February 1919 from wounds suffered in France. His death came two years after that of his younger brother Sgt. Gray.
He is commemorated on page 596 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill).
