Lieutenant Edward Francis Burgess was born in Burford, ON, on 8 September 1892. Prior to military service, he was a salesman for Consolidated Rubber Co. He enlisted as a Private with the 36th Canadian Infantry Battalion on 20 April 1915 in Hamilton, ON. He soon achieved the rank of Corporal and then Lieutenant with the Western Ontario Regiment. In June 1916, at the Battle of Mt. Sorrel, Lieut. Burgess suffered shrapnel wounds. He wrote home about his injuries in a letter which was published in the London Free Press. On 15 October 1918, Lieut. Burgess was wounded in action, and died in hospital that same day.

He is commemorated on page 377 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
