Patterson was born in Caledonia, ON, 16 January 1890. As a child, he moved to London, ON, and resided at 856 Hellmuth Ave. He attended London Collegiate Institute and studied Arts at Western University before volunteering for the CEF on 27 November 1914. Lieut. Patterson served with both the 5th Field Company, Canadian Engineers and 6th Field Company of the 2nd Division Engineers before receiving a commission in the Imperial Army on 28 September 1917. Lieut. Patterson was killed in action on 22 June 1918 as a member of D Battery, 168th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery.
He is commemorated on page 592 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber in the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill).
