Lieutenant Herbert Atherton Whitaker

Herbert Atherton Whitaker was born on 29 June 1888. He was well known in Toronto after serving two years with the 48^th Highlanders, but lived most of his life in London, ON, before moving to Calgary where he enlisted in the 50^th Canadian Infantry Battalion. Lieut. Whitaker was admired by his men oversees and regarded as calm, fearless and soldierly in the face of fire. On 8 October 1916, he was gassed and wounded while making rounds of the front-line trenches. He became aggressively ill and died of his wounds on 25 October 1916. His brother, Guy Whitaker was a major in the CEF, and their sister Marjorie served as a nurse in the 1^st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, England.

He is commemorated on page 181 of the First World War Book of Remembrance, (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
