Nursing Sister Whitely

Anna Elizabeth Whitely was born in Manvers, ON, on 22 January 1872. Although much of her family lived in London, ON, she received her nursing training in Cleveland, Ohio (USA) and worked there for several years. Nurse Whitely joined Western University’s No. 10 Canadian Stationary Hospital and left for overseas service on 23 June 1916. As an experienced nurse, she also served as matron at another military hospital. The War Secretary commended her for valuable service, published in 1917 by Toronto Star. She fell ill with stomach pains in early 1918 and was treated at No. 14 Stationary Hospital in Boulogne, France. On 21 April 1918 she died of a stomach tumour.
She is commemorated on page 522 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
