Nursing Sister Mellett

Henrietta Mellett was born in Galway, Ireland, on 21 October 1883, but later immigrated to London, ON, to join her sister. After graduating from Victoria Hospital’s nursing school in 1912 she was an assistant matron in hospitals in Nanaimo, BC, and Weyburn, SK. When the First World War began, she worked for the Red Cross in Egypt and Great Britain. In November 1917, she enlisted in the Canadian Army Medical Corps, and was posted to No. 15 General Hospital, Taplow, Great Britain. After a two-week leave visiting relatives in Ireland, she boarded RMS Leinster on 10 October 1918 to return to Taplow. She died in an explosion when the ship was torpedoed.
She is commemorated on page 469 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
