Chester Gordon Johnson was born on 10 December 1895 and lived in London, ON. He worked as a driver for R Mountjoy & Son and resided with his family at 552 Central Ave. Before enlisting in the 70^th Canadian Infantry Battalion on 30 September 1915, Johnson had already served in the Militia for one year. He was drafted into the 18^th Btn in France and fought in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The night of 20-21 July 1917, the battalion was subjected to heavy trench mortar fire near Lens, France. Private Johnson received multiple wounds and died early the next morning in the care of No. 6 Canadian Field Ambulance.

He is commemorated on page 263 of the First World War Book of Remembrance, (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
