George Laing was the first child of James and Mary Laing. Born on 15 July 1896, he became an older brother to two sisters. George left his job as a clerk to fight in the First World War. Although he lived in London, ON, he joined the 110th Canadian Infantry Battalion on 7 December 1915 in his hometown, Stratford, ON. He received provisional promotions, and was put in charge of supplies as Acting Company Quarter Master Sergeant. He reverted to Private at his own request and was posted to France with the 58th Btn. Initially reported missing on 26 October 1917, later reports clarified that Pte. Laing had died attacking enemy lines at Passchendaele.

He is commemorated on page 270 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
