Born in Great Britain, Clarke served twelve years with the 17th Leicestershire Regiment before him and his wife moved to 37 Josephine St., London, ON. He enlisted with the 142nd Canadian Infantry Battalion on 3 January 1916, at the age of forty. Pte. Clarke travelled to France in March 1917, and was killed in action on 4 March 1918.
He is commemorated on page 385 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
