Sumner was born 10 September 1893, the oldest of three boys. His family lived at 909 Princess Ave, London, ON. Before the war, he worked as a junior clerk for the London Life Insurance Company. Ira was only twenty-one years old when he enlisted for the CEF, on 10 April 1915. He had had some military experience as a member of the 7th Company Canadian Engineers. While serving in Europe, Pte. Sumner fought in D Company, 18th Canadian Infantry Battalion. He died of wounds received in action on 25 November 1915 near Vierstraat, Belgium.
He is commemorated on page 38 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
