Private James Stephen was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1899. He enlisted for service in London, ON, on 3 December 1915 at the age of 16, claiming he was 18 years old. He arrived in Great Britain on 8 August 1916. He began in the 135th Canadian Infantry Battalion and finally joined the 4th Btn. on 23 May 1917. Pte. Stephen was killed in action on 6 November 1917 at Passchendaele, poisoned by gas.
He is commemorated on page 332 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
