Private Johnston Douglas Kirkpatrick

Born on 29 March, 1891, Kirkpatrick was one of seven children to Irish immigrant parents, John C. and Mary Kirkpatrick of 62 Marmora St. London, ON. Before the war, he worked for the Grand Trunk Railway. He was 24 years old when he enlisted on 25 August, 1915 in the 34^th Canadian Infantry Battalion, though later he was transferred to the 5^th Canadian Mounted Riffles and served with this unit in France starting 9 June 1916. He was reported missing in October 1916. Over a year later, Pte. Kirkpatrick was presumed to have died on or since 1 October, 1916, “for official purposes.”

He is commemorated on page 114 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
