Private Robert Henry Smith Horwood

Born in London, ON, on 17 June 1898, Robert was the eldest of Henry and Emily Horwood’s seven children. At age eighteen, he left his job as a clerk at dry goods store R.C. Struthers and Co. to enlist in May 1917. He sailed that August from Halifax, NS, to Great Britain as part of the Canadian Army Medical Corps. Overseas, he was reassigned to the 43^rd Canadian Infantry Battalion. After spending just four months in the field, he went missing during an attack on 16 August 1918 and was not officially declared dead until May 1919. His grieving mother chose the inscription for his tombstone: “Love and remembrance twine around his name.”

He is commemorated on page 431 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
