Sergeant Frederick John Kelland

Kelland was born on 8 March 1891 in Exeter, ON, the youngest of 8 children. He went to Empress Avenue School and St. George School in London, ON, before enlisting on 11 January 1915 with the 33^rd Canadian Infantry Battalion. He had served for three years previously in the United States infantry. Sgt. Kelland was posted to the 1^st Btn in the field in August 1915 before transferring to the 1^st Canadian Division Machine Gun Corps. In May 1916 he was promoted to Corporal and 12 days later suffered a gunshot wound to the back. He recovered in hospital, and was promoted to Sergeant in the CMGC. He was later hospitalized for venereal disease. On 8 August 1918, Sgt. Kelland suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest in Amiens, France.

He is commemorated on page 440 of the First World War Book of Remembrance (Memorial Chamber, Peace Tower, Parliament Hill).
