There was a time when Quebec had a fully integrated transportation system – when the automobiles and trains worked in close collaboration to move tourists from one point to another.

A case in point is the service offered by Gaspé Tours. Based in Mont-Joli, the company picked up clients getting off the Canadian National Railway Ocean Limited or Scotian at the train station in Mont-Joli and offered a chauffeur-driven tour of the Gaspé Peninsula. The per person fare in 1951 was just $90 for single room accommodation.

Drivers who spoke English and French piloted five passenger cars around the peninsula, clockwise or anti-clockwise, covering the 550 miles in just four days. Accommodation and meals were booked in advance at Rivière Madeleine, Percé and Carleton. The last evening was spent at the Commercial Hotel in Mont-Joli. Clients departed on trains for Montreal or Halifax the following morning. It was an efficient and effortless way to visit the region.
