Tennis Anyone?

What to do in a seaside resort where it is too cold to swim? Lawn tennis came to Quebec from England in the 1870s. Tennis required nothing more than a piece of flat terrain 60 feet by 120 feet and two people to play. By the 1880s, it had taken hold in North America and was soon a sport practised in many vacation communities.

At the Cascade Golf and Tennis Club in Metis Beach, tennis was a more serious endeavour. Six courts allowed members of various skill levels to practice and to compete in tournaments for club trophies and community prowess. The rules were strict. All players were to be dressed in whites – and the women had to don dresses long enough to cover their ankles. There was no tennis on Sundays either – at least not until Sunday service (at the church located right next to the 18^th hole of the golf course) was over.
