Mrs. Harriet Burnard (nee Sheppard) was 23 years old when she boarded S.S. Caribou with her 8-month-old daughter Shirley. Both mother and baby drowned when the ferry sank on October 14, 1942. Harriet was born in Rose Blanche, Newfoundland but lived most of her life in North Sydney, Nova Scotia. She was survived by her husband Arthur Burnard and 3-year-old son Kenneth.
Their deaths were typical of many of the civilian passengers, who were traveling to Newfoundland for personal or business reasons.
