This memorial commemorates the sinking of the Newfoundland ferry S.S. “Caribou” off Channel-Port aux Basques, Newfoundland on October 14, 1942. The steamship was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-69. Of the 238 people on board, 137 lost their lives. The dead include 31 of the ship’s crew, 57 servicemen and women, and 49 civilians, including women and children. Funding to erect the memorial was raised by the Newfoundland Railway Employees’ Welfare Association Ltd. This memorial was unveiled in Port aux Basques, Newfoundland on October 14, 1947, five years after the sinking.
