Death toll from the loss of S.S. “Caribou”

The death toll from the sinking of S.S. Caribou was greater than any other ship lost in Canadian and Newfoundland waters during World War II.
There were 238 people on board S.S. Caribou. As a result of the sinking, 137 died and 101 survived. Of 118 military personnel onboard, 57 died (48%). Of 74 civilians onboard, 49 died (66%). Of the 46 crew of S.S. Caribou, 31 died (67%).
