This photo shows the funeral procession in Channel, Newfoundland for six crewmen of S.S. Caribou, whose bodies were recovered from the ocean after the sinking. The funeral took place on October 18, 1942. The six crewmen buried were Captain Ben Taverner, First Mate Stanley Taverner, Third Mate Harold Taverner, Assistant Stewards Jerome Gale and Llewelyn Carter, and Fireman Arthur Thomas.
Harold Janes, who was chief cook on S.S. Caribou, survived the sinking with a fractured shoulder. He described that day looking “upon the saddest sight I had ever seen, when six of the men that a few days ago were well and robust were laid to rest in the cemetery.”
