Leonard Shiers, youngest survivor of S.S. “Caribou” sinking

Fifteen-month-old Leonard Shiers was the youngest survivor of the sinking of S.S. Caribou. In this photo, he is shown with a nurse at the City Hospital in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Leonard and his mother (Mrs. Gladys Shiers) were both convalescing at the hospital after being rescued from the sea by H.M.C.S. Grandmere on October 14, 1942. They had taken the ferry to travel to St. John’s, Newfoundland, where Mrs. Shiers’ husband Elmer worked as a shipwright for the Royal Canadian Navy.
