This map shows the hometowns of the 137 people who died in the sinking of S.S. Caribou. The impact of the tragedy was felt across North America. Victims came from as far away as British Columbia and Florida. The greatest numbers of dead came from Channel-Port aux Basques and St. John’s in Newfoundland. Yet, there were also groups from North Sydney and Halifax in Nova Scotia, as well as Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg.
From the map, it is easy to see how the news of this disaster devastated many families and communities across Newfoundland and Canada. This shock and anger soon transformed into greater political resolve to defeat the Nazi enemy.
