This photo of Percy Moores was taken in World War II, when he was a sailor in the Royal Navy. Since Newfoundland was a British colony and not part of Canada during the war, many Newfoundlanders joined the Royal Navy of Great Britain. Ordinary Seaman Moores was 19 years old in 1942 when he and 24 crewmates stepped onto S.S. Caribou for a trip home to Newfoundland on leave. Percy was lucky to survive the sinking of the ferry, along with his buddy Art Barry.
