This shipwreck image was captured using multibeam sonar on the wreck of S.S. Saganaga off Bell Island, Newfoundland. This ship was also sunk by a German U-boat in 1942 during World War II.
Multibeam and sidescan sonar are used to locate and record shipwrecks on the seafloor. Sonar equipment is attached underneath or towed behind ships that sail back and forth “mowing the lawn” to map the shape of the seafloor. Large shipwrecks are clearly visible in the sonar imagery.
It would be possible, with adequate financial support, to use this sonar equipment to search for and locate the wreck of S.S. Caribou. Once the shipwreck is found, it could be protected as a National Historic Site by the Canadian government.
