An unidentified blonde-haired baby boy was buried in Hardwood Hill cemetery in Sydney, Nova Scotia on October 17, 1942. The boy had survived the sinking of S.S. Caribou three days before but had died of exposure aboard H.M.C.S. Grandmere after being rescued from the sea.
The only identification found on the child was a signet ring with the initial “P”. As no one came forward to identify the body, authorities assumed the boy’s parents must have also perished in the sinking.
