Late October
By Laimon Mitris, painting, acrylic on canvas (1978).
MA, musée d’art Collection
Mitris (1920-2009), an heteroclite artist who explored as much the abstract as the figurative, painted many “surreal” landscapes inspired by the boreal forest and the Abitibi countryside. He also made many high reliefs made of sand, masonite and cards to show a universe cosmic and psychedelic. Some of his work show patterns that are similar to those of Algonquin artists. He was born in Latvia and spent most of his adult life in Abitibi-Témiscamingue.
