As the only means of communication with the outside world in the 19th century, the Témiscamingue’s watercourses have long been the way to drive wood logs south for their transformation in Pembroke and Ottawa along the Ottawa River. In the 1880s, the life of forest workers was hard, it required long workdays and meals offered little variety (peas, salted pork, and so on). Log drivers also faced many risks while travelling down the rivers as they are still very cold during spring.
