During his official visit to Canada in fall 1919, the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII) stopped in Verdun to pay tribute to the community’s exceptional war effort. When he arrived on October 30, he was welcomed by a jubilant city! Nearly two-thirds of the population crammed into Wellington and De l’Église streets to welcome him. City Hall was decked in Union Jacks and all of the buildings along his path were magnificently adorned. The prince was received by the mayors of Verdun and Montréal, as well as by over 300 veterans from Verdun. Verdun Red Cross volunteers who had served in the war and the Verdun Scouts had the honour of being by the veterans’ side.
