The women’s committee of the Verdun Red Cross was led by the mayor’s wife, Elizabeth Wilson. Members of the organization took part in the war effort by cutting cloth that was distributed to different units to make clothes. The organization also offered a popular course among women in Verdun called Emergencies in the War. The Verdun branch quickly grew and by the end of 1939 included 1200 members and 35 active units. Ms. Wilson reported that $67,198.09 was raised between the opening of the branch and February 1945.
