Painting the Braeside Municipal Building red was a symbolic gesture when this building was officially opened during Canada’s Centennial year in 1967.
In 1914, Braeside became a police village which allowed for an elected governing body of three trustees while remaining part of McNab Township. Seven years later, when the population reached approximately 500 people, Braeside was incorporated as a Village. This allowed the Municipality to levy its own taxes. The 1923 Assessment roll reported that there were 107 males in the village between the ages of 21 and 60, most of whom had occupations linked to the mill.
In December 1965, a bylaw was passed by Braeside Council to commemorate Canada’s Centennial by building a new municipal office with an estimated cost of $25,000.00. Coming in on budget, M. Sullivan & Son of Arnprior constructed the building which was located on Centre Street near the fire hall. Reeve Dick Robbins and council members Frank Kelford, Neil Mullen, John A. Gillies and Bill Meek presided over the opening ceremonies which took place September 6, 1967.
In January 1998, amalgamation throughout the province of Ontario resulted in Braeside joining McNab Township to become the Municipality of McNab/Braeside with a combined population of approximately 7000. The Braeside municipal building was then used by the volunteer fire department.
