The back of the stone monument in the Seaman’s Memorial provides the names of the sailors who died in the U-boat attacks and sinkings of SS Saganaga, SS Rose Castle and SS P.L.M. 27 in 1942 at Bell Island.
The monument lists the names of 70 sailors as killed in the sinkings. The list includes 29 crewmen from Saganaga, 29 men from Rose Castle, and 12 sailors from P.L.M. 27.
Current evidence indicates instead that 65 sailors died here in 1942. Five sailors listed under Rose Castle as lost actually survived the sinking.
