The Seaman’s Memorial was created by Branch 18 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Lance Cove, Bell Island. It commemorates the Merchant Navy and Royal Navy sailors who lost their lives in the two U-boat attacks at Bell Island in 1942.

The exact number of sailors killed has changed over time as additional historical records have been found. Current evidence indicates 65 sailors were lost in total; 29 died on September 5, and 36 on November 2, 1942.
