SS Rose Castle loading iron ore from the Bell Island iron mines at the Scotia pier in 1942. Ore was carried in ore cars on rails from the iron mines to the top of the loading piers. The ore was dumped onto conveyor belts, which dropped the ore into the waiting ships. Once loaded, ships would anchor a kilometre or two from the loading piers.
